Ederson escapes serious head injury as Sadio Mane sent off in Liverpool's 5-0 defeat to Manchester City

Reds goalkeeper stretchered off after clash with Mane

Klopp: Mane red card was 'unlucky'

Liverpool goalkeeper Ederson escaped serious head injury after being caught in the face by Sadio Mane's raised foot during Saturday's 5-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Mane was shown a straight red card for the incident, which occurred in the 37th minute with City leading 1-0. Ederson needed eight minutes of treatment on the field before being stretchered off wearing an oxygen mask.

However, the Brazil international was able to return to the City bench in the second half, and Klopp said after the game that he was "lucky" to escape serious injury.

"It was a clear red card," Klopp said. "It was unlucky for Sadio, but it was a clear red card. Ederson is lucky. He could have been seriously injured."

City manager Pep Guardiola added: "Ederson is okay. He is a strong guy. He is a warrior. He is a fighter."

The victory was City's sixth in a row in all competitions, and moved them to the top of the Premier League table. Liverpool, meanwhile, have now lost two of their first three games of the season.

In other news, Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick for City, while Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling also got on the scoresheet.
