The History of the Paralympic Games

The Paralympic Games were founded by Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a German-born neurologist who was working at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England after World War II.

Guttmann believed that sport could help rehabilitate people with disabilities and improve their quality of life.

In 1948, Guttmann organized the first Stoke Mandeville Games for disabled war veterans. The games were a success, and they led to the creation of the International Stoke Mandeville Games in 1952.

The International Stoke Mandeville Games were the inspiration for the first Paralympic Games, which were held in Rome in 1960.

Since then, the Paralympic Games have grown significantly in size and scope. The games are now held every four years, and they have become one of the most important sporting events in the world.
