Kenny Payne: A Basketball Journey

Early Life and College Career

Kenneth Victor Payne, born on November 25, 1966, embarked on his basketball journey in Mississippi. As a standout player at Laurel High School, he led his team to two state championships and earned All-American honors.

Payne continued his career at the University of Louisville, where he played alongside legendary coach Denny Crum. Known for his defensive prowess and leadership, he helped the Cardinals reach the Final Four in 1986 and 1988.

Assistant Coaching and Return to Louisville

After graduating from Louisville, Payne began his coaching career as an assistant at Boston University and Kansas State. He later returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Pitino in 2009.

Payne's successful tenure as an assistant led to his promotion as associate head coach in 2014. He played a significant role in the Cardinals' national championship run in 2013 and remained with the program until 2017.

Head Coaching at Manhattan and Return to Louisville

In 2018, Payne took over as head coach at Manhattan College. He guided the Jaspers to two MAAC Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in his four seasons at the helm.

In 2022, Payne made a highly anticipated return to Louisville as head coach. However, his stint with the Cardinals was short-lived. After compiling a 12-52 record in two seasons, he was fired in March 2023.
